FTAA- NEGOTIATING GROUP ON INVESTMENT

FIFTH MEETING

Miami, February 15, 2000

PRESS COMMUNIQUE

1. The fifth meeting of the Negotiating Group on Investment was held in Miami on February 15, 2000, with the participation of the following countries: Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

2. The agenda approved for discussion is attached as Annex I.

3. During the course of the meeting, the Group agreed on a Work Program for this negotiating phase, in keeping with the mandate of the Toronto Ministerial to prepare a draft text of the Investment chapter to be remitted to the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) 12 weeks prior to the Ministerial meeting scheduled for Argentina in April, 2001.

4. The next meeting of the Negotiating Group on Investment will be held on May 22-24, 2000.
