WORKERS RIGHTS IN VENEZUELA UNDER THE FREE TRADE AREA OF THE AMERICAS (FTAA) AGREEMENT

Executive Summary

The objective is to identify the impact of the Agreement on worker’s rights in Venezuela.

The right to work and other related rights, such as economic, social and cultural rights, as well as work as a human right, workers and their rights, and enforcement, are being studied.

The progress in the FTAA negotiations and the State foreign policy are analyzed, so as to make a final determination regarding the aforementioned effects.

It is concluded that the FTAA will represent a new mechanism of economic control, and that the framework of guarantees accorded by national laws does not favor international trade interests, since the FTAA would mean having to harmonize labor legislation through deregulation and alter basic principles to ensure greater autonomy in the decision-making of labor entities.
