FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

Twentieth Meeting

Puebla, 26 – 28 May 2003

PRESS COMMUNIQUE

The Twentieth Meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Intellectual Property (NGIP) was held in Puebla from 26 to 28 May 2003. The NGIP Chair, Mr. Orlando Jorge Mera, of the Dominican Republic, presided over the meeting.

The Group’s discussion followed the approved agenda (attached). The NGIP addressed all of the items on the agenda.

Pursuant to the mandate of the Quito Ministerial Meeting, the NGIP discussed and made progress in Part II, Intellectual Property Rights, Section 3, Copyright and Related Rights; Section 4 on Folklore; Section 6, on Traditional Knowledge and Access to Genetic Resources; Section 11,. Unfair Competition; Section 12., Anti-Competitive Practices in Contractual Licenses, and Part III, Enforcement.

The Chair reported on the distribution of two new contributions on intellectual property that had been received since the Nineteenth Meeting of the NGIP, in response to the open invitation to civil society.

Delegates from the following 17 countries were present: Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panamá, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United Status, and Venezuela.

The NGIP will hold its next meeting from 24 to 27 June 2003.
