FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON INVESTMENT

Nineteenth Meeting

Panama City, December 9 - 12, 2002

PRESS COMMUNIQUE

1. The Nineteenth Meeting of the Negotiating Group on Investment (NGIN) was held in Panama City from 9 to 12 December 2002, with the participation of the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, and Venezuela.

2. The approved agenda is attached hereto as Annex I.

3. The NGIN agreed on a work plan for the new 2002-2003 negotiating period.

4. The NGIN exchanged views on the issue of methods and modalities for negotiations, indicating the results of their discussion in a document on notification, presentation, and exchange of initial offers.

5. In connection with the issue of “Relation to Other FTAA Entities,” the Group exchanged ideas regarding future coordination with other groups. A number of mechanisms were proposed that could be used to facilitate this task.

6. The Chair informed the Group of two contributions from civil society, received after the Eighteenth Meeting of the NGIN.

7. The Twentieth Meeting of the Group will be held in Panama City from 10-14 February 2003.
