HEMISPHERIC COOPERATION PROGRAM PROJECT PROFILE
NEGOTIATING GROUP ON MARKET ACCESS
 


Introduction

Based on the principles, objectives, and general characteristics of the Hemispheric Cooperation Program, we hereby present the following project profile with a view to building greater capacity to negotiate and administer the FTAA Agreement.
 
  1. Project title

    “Strengthening of the Trade Information Office for private sector and civil society negotiations and consultations”

  2. Background

    This project came about with a view to complying with the principle of transparency and participation of civil society in the negotiations and implementation of the FTAA agreement.


  3. Rationale

    To comply with the principle of transparency and participation of civil society, a more broad-based and sustained process needs to be advanced with the members of civil society so as to keep them informed on an ongoing basis and afford them a clear vision of the progress of the negotiations of the FTAA and the implementation of the agreement beyond 2005.

     
  4. Objectives of the Project:

    Build the Trade Information Office’s capacity to publish brochures, leaflets, and press, radio, and TV advertisements. And run seminars and courses to educate civil society representatives to encourage them to frame and present proposals to the government.


  5. Inputs: resources needed for the project

    Approximate amount US$200,000.00

    • Publications of information documents on the progress of the FTAA Process
    • Advertising time and space in the press, radio and TV
    • Direct training (seminars, courses, workshops, etc.)

  6. Expected results

    Secure proactive participation of Nicaragua’s civil society and encourage it to contribute with informed proposals to the Nicaraguan government’s negotiating capacity in the FTAA negotiations and implementation phase.
