FTAA - COMMITTEE OF GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES ON THE PARTICIPATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY

Seventeenth Meeting

Panama, June 24, 2002


PRESS COMMUNIQUÉ
 

  1. The Seventeenth Meeting of the Committee of Government Representatives on the Participation of Civil Society was held in Panama on 24 June 2002. In attendance were representatives from the following 16 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

  2. During the meeting, the representatives approved the attached agenda and discussed the items listed therein.

  3. The Committee followed up on the activities aimed at encouraging increased and enhanced communication with civil society, including follow up on the Open Invitation to civil society, national and regional seminars on the FTAA, and designing the official FTAA website. The Committee took note of the announcement by the delegation of Mexico, on behalf of the governments of North America, on the upcoming regional seminar titled “Opportunities and Challenges of the FTAA for North America,” to take place 18 July in Merida, Yucatan.   4. The Committee also began work on its third report, for consideration at the next Meeting of the TNC and subsequently presentation to the Ministers Responsible for Trade, who will meet in October, in Quito, Ecuador.

  5. The Committee will meet in Panama City 29-30 July 2002.
