FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON COMPETITION POLICY


Seventh Meeting

Miami, 24-26 April 2000

PRESS RELEASE

 

  1. The seventh meeting of the Negotiating Group on Competition Policy (NGCP) was held in Miami, on from April 24-26, 2000.
     
  2. The meeting was attended by representatives from 22 countries of the Hemisphere:
     
    Argentina
    Bahamas
    Bolivia
    Brazil
    Canada
    Chile
    Colombia
    Costa Rica
    Dominican Republic
    Ecuador
    El Salvador
       Guatemala
    Honduras
    Mexico
    Nicaragua
    Panama
    Paraguay
    Peru
    Trinidad & Tobago
    United States
    Uruguay
    Venezuela

  3. The Group´s discussions were based on the attached Agenda; they focused on the study of proposals submitted by the countries on items 3 to 7 of the indicative list. They also discussed the item on competition policy and trade. As a result of the discussion, a bracketed text was prepared with the items on which no consensus had been reached. The Tripartite Committee also made a presentation on the relationship between Competition and Trade.
     
  4. The Negotiating Group on Competition Policy scheduled its next meeting for August 1-4, 2000.

AGENDA

  1. Adoption of the Agenda.
     
  2. Discussion and drafting of items 5, 6, 7, 3, and 4 of the indicative list, in the order indicated herein.
     
  3. Presentation by the Tripartite Committee on the interaction between trade and competition policies.
     
  4. Discussion on the issue of the interaction between trade and competition policies (to be indicated with the topic identified in item 3 of the proposal submitted by the United States Delegation.)
     
  5. Selection of other topics to be developed within the context of the interaction between trade and competition policies.
