Miami, July 25-28, 2000

PRESS COMMUNIQUÉ

The Eighth Meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Agriculture (NGAG), was held in Miami, Florida from July 25-28, 2000. Delegates from the following countries participated: Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The NGAG made progress in the discussion of export subsidies, other measures and practices that distort hemispheric trade in agricultural products, and other measures that have an effect equivalent to export subsidies. Likewise, the Group started discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary measures. The relationship between this Group and the FTAA Negotiating Group on Market Access was also part of the debate.

The Ninth Meeting of the NGAG will take place in Miami, from 3-6 October, 2000.
