FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON AGRICULTURE

Fourth Meeting

Miami, 24-26 May 1999

PRESS COMMUNIQUÉ

The Fourth Meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Agriculture (NGAG), which has held in Miami, Florida from May 24-26, 1999, began with the reading of the Report of the Chair of the Negotiating Group on Market Access concerning the previous discussions held by that Group.

Subsequently, the NGAG considered its Agenda, in which the central issue of this Meeting was the treatment of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.

In addition, the Group reviewed the other regular agenda items including: tariffs, non-tariffs measures, safeguards, export subsidies, other measures and practices that distort the trade of agricultural products, including those that have equivalent effects to export subsidies, technical assistance and the report for the next Ministerial Meeting.

The next Meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Agriculture will be held in Miami, Florida from September 27-30, 1999.

The Agenda of discussions and the list of delegations is attached to this Communiqué.
